A high school soccer game in East Harlem was scrapped when a group of migrants brazenly refused to vacate the pitch, asserting their “rights” with a flippant attitude of “you can’t make us leave.” It’s a stark emblem of the disregard for community and order that’s spreading unchecked in our society.
The high school teams arrived in uniforms ready to play, alongside a referee and coaches. Their game was brought to a standstill not by weather or an unforeseen event, but by about 30 men who, from appearances and interactions, seemed to be African migrants with a scant grasp of English and even less respect for local norms. This story is an example of the fundamental disrespect for our communities by the migrants who come into our country unchecked.
When law enforcement arrived, instead of immediate action by asking the migrants to leave, they asked the soccer teams for paperwork, as if a gathering of organized teams was somehow in question. And even with a permit in hand, safety concerns, fueled by the migrants’ defiance, forced the game’s cancellation.
It’s a disgraceful commentary on the state of our cities under liberal governance that a youth soccer match is forfeited because migrants refuse to adhere to the basic principles of community and respect. What message does this send to our youth? That rules can be flouted with impunity, and that those who follow them are the ones penalized? In today’s America, rule-breakers win, while law-abiding citizens are left to pick up the pieces.
This incident is symptomatic of a broader issue plaguing our great country: an escalating disregard for law and order, under the guise of “rights” and “freedoms,” leading to a breakdown in societal norms and safety. It’s a bitter pill for communities who see their public spaces overrun and their children’s activities disrupted.
We must demand more from our city officials and law enforcement: a return to principles that prioritize safety, respect for public spaces, and the rule of law. Our kids, and our communities, deserve no less. Without firm action, the fabric of our society will continue to fray, thread by thread, until America is but a tattered remnant of its former self.
